Scholarships-MSc in Math Engg

Scholarships worth 48,000 euros to attend a European joint MSc in Mathematical Engineering.

MathMods is a two-year joint Master of Science (MSc) programme (120 ECTS) between 5 European universities, which aims to provide students with a cross cultural education while they get acquainted with both theory and applications of mathematical modelling in engineering.

Several cholarships are offered by the European Commission to both non- European and European students. These scholarships amount to a maximum of EUR 48,000.00 to cover the two-year expenses and are granted to the most promising applicants.

CONSORTIUM

The MathMods Consortium is coordinated by the

– University of L’Aquila in Italy (UAQ)

and involves other four leading institutions in Europe:

– Autonomous University of Barcelona in Catalonia (UAB),

– Gdansk University of Technology in Poland (GUT),

– University of Hamburg in Germany (UHH),

– University of Nice – Sophia Antipolis in France (UNS).

STUDY PROGRAMME

The MathMods Master’s degree course consists of four semesters. Each semester totals 30 ECTS credits. The mobility scheme involves two different locations at least. The first year is common for all students: this will guarantee an equal knowledge platform for all of them. The second year is divided into five paths, which reflect the partners’ field of excellence.

– First semester: Theory at UAQ, Italy

– Second semester: Numerics at UHH, Germany

– Third+Fourth semester: Applications at UAB / UHH / UAQ / GUT / UNSA

LANGUAGE

The language of the whole course is exclusively English at each of the five universities. Students must also attend (and acquire the relating credits of) a course of basic Italian language (first semester) and German language (second semester). Students will also have the opportunity to attend local language courses during their second year (spent at one of the five partners).

7 four-year doctoral student positions,astronomy, physics, chemistry, mathematics and statistics

Important: The general call text containing essential information about the call can be found here.

Call for applicants for seven (7) four-year doctoral student positions in the fields of astronomy, physics, chemistry, mathematics and statistics

The Doctoral Programme in Exact Sciences (Exactus–DP) operates at three departments of the Faculty of Sciences (Department of Physics, Department of Chemistry and Department of Mathematical Sciences), the Mathematics Division of the Faculty of Technology, the Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory, and at Centre for Underground Physics in Pyhäsalmi.  The broad range of research fields covered in the programme belongs to the focus area of “Environment, Natural Resources and Materials” at University of Oulu, and includes:

  • high-energy astrophysics, physics of galaxies, physics of planets and planetary systems, astroparticle physics, cosmic rays physics, space physics (incl. magnetospheric and  ionospheric physics, solar-terrestrial connections, space climate),
  • theoretical physics, main group chemistry, molecular and materials sciences, electron spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, biophysics of neural signalling,
  • mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, mathematics education and inverse problems.

Detailed information about the research fields and projects of the groups associated with the Exactus-DP can be found at the following web sites:

The Exactus-DP invites applications for 7 four-year doctoral student positions in the fields of astronomy, physics, chemistry, mathematics and statistics.

The main criteria that will be used by the steering committee of Exactus-DP in selecting the candidates are the following:

1)    The type and depth of the education obtained at the university, qualification, publications.
2)    The grades and marks obtained at the university exams, as appear in the official transcript of records.
3)    Recommendation letters from former supervisors and professors.

Proficiency in English language, gender balance, and balance between the research fields and groups may also be taken into account. If the selected students are not well known by the steering committee of Exactus-DP, the work contract will include a 4-month trial period, at the end of which the student will provide a report to the steering committee and the primary supervisor. Based on this report, the committee will make the decision on whether to allow the continuation of the doctoral training.

In addition to the required documents defined in the General Call Text and Application Form, all applicants must include their CV, publication list, and a research plan (max 2 pages) written in coordination with a potential supervisor.  The Exactus-DP strongly encourages applicants to contact the potential supervisor well in advance to formulate a possible doctoral research project.

For further information about the Exactus Doctoral Programme, see https://wiki.oulu.fi/display/exactus/, or contact the Exactus-DP Director, Prof. Juri Poutanen (e-mail: juri.poutanen@oulu.fi).

For information about specific fields of study, potential supervisors, the coordination of the application and writing a research plan, please contact:
Astronomy – Prof. Juri Poutanen (juri.poutanen@oulu.fi);
Astroparticle physics –  Dr. Timo Enqvist (timo.enqvist@oulu.fi);
