The liberalization and regulation of network industries and infrastructures across the world creates a need for industries and public institutions to hire skilled professionals capable of understanding these processes and participating actively in their management and regulation.

The EMIN Joint Master Programme offers the opportunity to acquire expertise in the management of network industries from a global perspective that covers both economic/regulatory and technological/management issues. In these industries, teaching, training and research are typically carried out solely by focused specialists, which usually results in a skewed perspective. The purpose of this Master is to continue integrating specialists from different backgrounds and nationalities, and to make them interact in an interdisciplinary program so as to address the main problems faced by network industries in the current context of economic crisis and environmental concern. Our master students will learn the relevant engineering, economics, policy and management principles that should guide the functioning of network and infrastructure industries with a special focus on the energy and electrical power sector. Throughout the master, students will apply these skills and knowledge to solve real-life problems, since this course is dedicated to training qualified professionals.

This Master Programme is awarded jointly by some of the most prestigious European universities. First line American and Asian universities and research institutes are also part of the programme consortium.

The EMIN Joint Master Programme was awarded in 2006 the Erasmus Mundus excellence label by the European Commission. This award was renewed for another 5 years in 2010. Therefore, scholarships granted by the European Commission will be available both for EMIN students and visiting professors during the forthcoming years. The Erasmus Mundus excellence label has only been granted so far to 126 Masters and 34 doctorates in all disciplines and Universities across Europe. Comillas also coordinates the Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate in Sustainable Energy Technologies and Strategies (SETS Joint Doctorate).

The Erasmus Mundus programme aims to enhance quality in higher education through scholarships and academic cooperation between Europe and the rest of the world.

Business Intelligence (BI) promises an organization of the capability of collecting and analyzing internal and external data to generate knowledge and value, providing decision support at the strategic, tactical and operational levels. Now that we live in a knowledge society, people and organizations are immersed in a constantly flowing torrent of information, and businesses succeed or fail based largely on how effectively they collect, clean, transform, integrate, store, explore, analyze and monitor this information to predict future trends and make the best decisions. To succeed in this day and age, organizations can no longer afford to treat information and communication technologies as administrative tools, but need to embrace them as a strategic asset and embed them fully in their decision-making process.

Application Procedure

The application session for 2014-2016, starts from September 9th, 2013 onwards (see details below). Candidates are required to apply via the IT4BI online application form. Importantly, Category B students currently on their last year of Bachelor can submit their application even if they have not yet their diploma. If they are selected they need to submit their diploma and final grades for the last year not later than June 30th, 2014.

 

Candidates are informed that their personal data will be sent to the Agency and may be used by other bodies involved in the management of Erasmus Mundus (i.e. European Commission, Erasmus Mundus National Structures, EU Delegations, Erasmus Mundus Student and Alumni Association) for facilitating the student/doctoral candidate access to the joint programme.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply to IT4BI, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:

 

  • They have been awarded a Bachelor’s degree (i.e., the equivalent of 180 ECTS) with a major in computer science, from an accredited university. The university has to be listed in the International Handbook of Universities/World List of Universities or other Institutions of Higher Education, or be included in the following university rankings:

  • They must be able to demonstrate proficiency in English by means of an internationally recognised test equivalent to level B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The consortium will rely on how certification bodies evaluate their own equivalences against this framework, e.g., Cambridge General English FCE, IELTS (Academic) 5.5, TOEFL (paper based) 570, TOEFL (computer based) 230, TOEFL (internet based) 88, etc. Please refer to the FAQ for questions regarding proof of proficiency in English.

Application Periods

There are two application periods. Students applying for a scholarship must apply between September 9th, 2013 and December 15th, 2013. Those applying as self funded students must apply between March 1st, 2014 and April 30th, 2014 or June 30th, 2014 depending on the nationality. The deadlines are recalled below:

Selection procedure

Applications will be scored according to the following categories:

 

    • Domain of the bachelor : Points will be assigned proportional to the percentage of Computer Science credits in the curriculum.
    • Academic results : This will be calculated as the weighted average of the marks in the different subjects.
    • Other studies : A second bachelor or master will score depending on the obtained credits in computer science. Extra-curricular courses taken will be scored based on lecturing hours taking.
    • Professional experience : Points will be given by year of work on IT or BI position (regarding the position held and the topic).
    • Personal project : Points will be assigned based on the following categories: organisation, sequencing, content, vocabulary and word choice, critical thinking, originality and creativity, accuracy of facts.
    • Reference letters : Points will be assigned based on the approval, comments and reputation of the referees, as testified by the reference letters and the referees’ H-factor.

 

 

A final ranked list of candidates, based on all obtained points, will thus be produced. A main list containing the top 20-25 students will be submitted to the European Commission for scholarship approval. A reserved list is also produced.

Visa conditions

To apply for a visa as a self-funded student, you will need to have a financial guarantor. The guarantor must be able to prove that he has a monthly income that is sufficiently high for him to be able to pay you 604€/month, while retaining 973€/month for himself and 150€/month for each dependent. If these conditions cannot be met, the Belgian consulate will not issue a student visa.

Note that it is very difficult, and in some cases impossible, for an accompanying spouse or partner of a non-European student, to obtain a visa.

Training programme

IGBMC’s PhD Programme is based on a three year – intensive training which comprises dedicated research investigations and active participation in diverse lectures and practicals.

IGBMC offers cutting-edge training in a large variety of topics covering Development & Stem Cells, Functional Genomics & Cancer, Integrated Structural Biology, and Translational Medecine & Neurogenetics. Students will conduct their research in one of the 47 laboratories of the Institute. Close collaborations with other research institutions in the “Parc d’Innovation” such as the trinational biotechnology school ESBS (Ecole Supérieure de Biotechnologie Strasbourg), the Faculty of Pharmacy as well as ISIS (Institut de Science et d’Ingénierie Supramoléculaires) and the University of Strasbourg at large, contribute to synergistic and collegial interactions within and beyond IGBMC.

During three years, PhD students will:
• acquire the skills needed to pursue a successful career in biology
• be able to attend numerous first-class seminars given by internationally renowned scientists and discuss with them
• experience the everyday excitement of working in a laboratory in an intellectually stimulating and dynamic environment

Duration

The duration of the PhD studies is normally 3 years. Registration for a fourth year can be granted by the University of Strasbourg if deemed necessary.

Monitoring

The team leader will be the main student supervisor and PhD mentor. In addition, the student’s progress will be monitored by a thesis committee, composed of the PhD mentor, one or more IGBMC faculty members and an external faculty member.

Training modules

During the course of your PhD, you will acquire the skills you need to pursue a successful career in biology. Complementary to your lab work, you will attend lectures and courses on scientific and socio-professional topics. Students are required to validate a total of 108 hours in order to be admitted for the thesis defense by the Doctoral School of the University of Strasbourg.  This entails 54 hours of scientific courses on at least three different topics and including a presentation (oral or poster) in a national or international conference. A scientific course/module has to last at least 6 hours in order to qualify. In addition, 54 hours of socio-professional courses on at least three different themes are required. IGBMC’s PhD Committee has developed a dedicated onsite training programme. Courses taught by IGBMC faculty members or heads of platforms will provide you with the latest developments in biology or state-of-the-art technologies. They can be validated with the Doctoral School.

UK : Rome Master’s scholarship

The University of Kent at Rome is pleased to be able to offer the following scholarship for taught Master’s students for the academic year 2013–14:

 

  • Faculty of Humanities’ Scholarship consisting of a fee waiver (worth £5,590) and a full maintenance stipend on £13,590, valid on a taught Master’s programme in the Rome suite of programmes.

 

Criteria

 

  • The scholarship is open to candidates who have been offered a place on any of the Kent at Rome MA programmes in Roman History and Archaeology or Ancient History, to start in September 2013.
  • Candidates must hold a first-class Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant subject, or hold an equivalent non-UK qualification or a Master’s degree at merit or distinction in a relevant subject or equivalent by July 2013.
  • The scholarship will be awarded to outstanding applicants able to demonstrate a high level of academic achievement, clear intellectual ambition and the potential to make a strong contribution to their chosen MA programme.
  • This scholarship is open to all full-time postgraduate applicants. UK, EU and overseas fee paying students are invited to apply.

 

How to apply

 

  • Candidates must make a formal application to study on an applicable Rome taught Master’s programme to commence their studies in September 2013.
  • Candidates must then be offered a place on the one of these programmes.
  • Candidates must also send a letter of motivation, not exceeding 500 words, stating why they wish to join their chosen Kent at Paris MA programme and how this fits into their longer term plans.

While high academic achievement does not guarantee admission, IMT expects such achievement or other persuasive evidence of professional promise.
